Frequently Asked Questions: General Information

Why should I sell my vehicle on Cars.com?

Cars.com provides you with exposure to prospective buyers at a national and local level. With our extended network, your ad will be exposed to the 10 million unique visitors each month who rely on the Cars.com network to meet their research needs and help them to connect with a local seller.

We have a national Cars.com site, www.Cars.com, where millions of people go for automobile information and to shop for new or used vehicles. In addition, we are the exclusive provider of used car listings for Yahoo! Autos, so when you advertise on Cars.com, your vehicle will also appear on Yahoo! Autos. We also have relationships with more than 175 newspapers and television stations in the United States, and each newspaper or television station has Cars.com on its Web site. Your ad will appear on all Cars.com web sites and can be found by people in your city and across the country. No other site provides this extensive reach.

For more information, check out our list of benefits from selling online.

How many people search for used cars on your site?

Every month, the Cars.com network is visited by more than 10 million unique visitors looking to purchase a new or used car. Many of these visitors have not decided on the exact make and model they wish to purchase, and will research several different makes and models during their search process. Each month, more than 30 million searches of our used-car listings are conducted.

How many ads do you have on your site?

On average, we have over one million used-car ads on our site at any given time. However, with more than 10 million monthly visitors and 30 million used car searches conducted each month, each ad has the potential to generate inquiries from multiple buyers.

How many prospects search for lower-value used vehicles?

Visitors to Cars.com are looking for more than just new or late-model used cars. In fact, more than 60% of the searches conducted by Cars.com visitors for used vehicles are conducted with no set price range. In addition, 32.5% of searches include vehicles in the range of $0 - $5,000 and more than 15% of searches conducted are only for vehicles in the range of $0 - $5,000.

How many leads does the average ad generate?

This is a tough question to answer since it will depend on many factors, including your car's make, model and year; your geographic location; the popularity of your car; and your car's condition. You can help improve the number and quality of leads you receive by following these tips:
  • Include a current photo of your vehicle. Ads with actual photos (instead of a manufacturer's photo) generate a greater number of leads, as these ads allow buyers to see the actual car advertised.
  • Include your car's vehicle identification number (VIN). This shows prospective buyers you have an actual vehicle you're selling and allows them to run a Carfax Vehicle History Report on your vehicle.
  • Include an honest, detailed description in the Additional Selling Points and Condition Description sections. The more information you provide about your vehicle, the more buyers will trust your ad and the more likely they will be to contact you. Shoppers won't expect a used car to be in perfect condition, so be honest.
  • Be realistic in your asking price (check resale values). If you ask near the top of the estimated resale value and don't receive any inquiries, you may be asking too much. In this case, you may want to lower your asking price.

What types of vehicles do visitors shop from on your site?

Visitors to the Cars.com network search for a variety of vehicles. Every month, they conduct over 30 million used vehicle searches. Many of these visitors use our advanced search function to narrow their search based on make, model, year, and distance.

What's the 90-day guarantee and how does it work?

When you purchase an ad that includes Cars.com's 90-Day Money Back Guarantee, you will be doing so with confidence. These ads include free renewals and edits to ensure that you will sell your car. If you are an individual seller and your car remains on Cars.com continuously for 90 days without being sold or traded in, you may be eligible for a refund of your listing fee. Your refund request must be postmarked within 14 days of the 90-day guarantee date.

Your 90-Day Money Back Guarantee date is 90 days after the start date of your ad. You can find the 90-Day Guarantee date on the email receipt you received with your order. You can find the start date of your ad on your My Ads page.

To be eligible for the Guarantee, each of the following conditions must be met:

a) Your ad choice must include the 90-Day Money Back Guarantee. Not all Cars.com ads include the guarantee; those that do are noted as such. Check the Package Selection page to make sure. The Guarantee does not apply to any listings that are purchased from one of Cars.com's newspaper or other affiliates or partners as part of a print/online bundled package, even if the listings appear on Cars.com.

b) The listing must have been on Cars.com for 90 consecutive calendar days without interruption following the ad start date. You must activate at least one renewal (at no charge) to accomplish this. If you upgrade to a listing that includes the guarantee, the 90-day period commences on the date that the upgraded listing first appears on the Cars.com site, not the date the original listing went live on the Cars.com site.

c) The advertised vehicle must still be for sale as of the date the refund request is submitted and the vehicle's title must be in your possession or the possession of a lien holder on your behalf. Listings for vehicles that have been sold (as the result of the listing or any other online or offline source) or traded in, or for vehicles that are otherwise no longer available for sale, are not eligible.

d) The listing must have been purchased by an Individual Seller and not a Dealer, as defined above in the Sell It Yourself Rules.

e) The listing must satisfy all provisions of the Cars.com Sell It Yourself Terms and Conditions.

f) Only one Guarantee refund per household per calendar year.

Individual Sellers who meet the Guarantee Eligibility/Limitation requirements may request a refund by following the process described below. Refunds will be granted only if all of the instructions below are followed.

a) Refund requests must be sent via postal mail to Cars.com, Attn: Money Back Guarantee, 175 W. Jackson Blvd., Suite 800, Chicago, IL 60604. No requests via email, fax or in person will be accepted.

b) Refund requests must be postmarked no earlier than 91 days after the listing first appeared on Cars.com and no later than 104 days after the date the listing first appeared on Cars.com.

c) Refund request must include a completed and signed copy of the Cars.com Refund Request form. Incomplete or unsigned refund request forms will not be accepted.

d) The refund will be credited to the credit card used for the ad purchase.

e) The listing will be removed from the Cars.com site when the refund is issued.

Cars.com shall, in its sole discretion, determine whether all requirements for the Guarantee have been satisfied and may terminate or modify the Guarantee program on a prospective basis at any time. The act of submitting a refund request does not ensure that a refund will be issued.

Note: Adobe Reader is required to view and print the Refund Request form. Download it for free here.

Additional conditions apply. Read the full 90-Day Money Back Guarantee Terms and Conditions here.

Can I do this by fax or phone?

Online advertisements may be placed over the Internet only. No ads will be taken by fax or over the phone.

How long does it take to sell a car? Do you help with the sale?

The length of time it takes to sell your car will depend partially on you. Our service is designed to generate leads for selling your car. However, you will need to conduct all discussions, negotiations and agreements yourself once you find an interested buyer. Cars.com matches you with potential buyers; we do not play any part in the actual sales process.

What is your refund policy? Who should I contact?

Our full refund policy can be found here.

Please review our Refund Policy prior to placing your ad. Cars.com does not generally provide refunds for Sell It Yourself listings more than 24 hours after the listing is purchased. If you wish to submit a refund request, please use our contact customer service form to submit your request for review.

Sellers who meet the 90-Day Money Back Guarantee eligibility requirements may request a refund following the process described in the Money Back Guarantee Terms and Conditions. 90-Day Money Back Guarantee refund requests must be made via postal mail using the Refund Request form. (Note: Adobe Reader is required to view and print the Refund Request form. Download it for free here.)

  • A list of standard and optional equipment on your vehicle. You can research your vehicle's standard equipment on Cars.com.

How do I know if shoppers are looking at my ad?

Some ad packages include free ad tracking tools, which monitor and report the number of times shoppers view your ad in Search Results and click to view the detailed Ad Page. If your ad has received numerous views but you still haven't sold your car, you can make unlimited changes to your ad to make it more attractive to potential buyers.

How long will my ad run on the site?

Ad duration varies by package type. Visit our Package Selection page for more details.

Do I need to do anything so that my ad appears on all sites in the Cars.com network?

No. Your Sell It Yourself ad will seamlessly appear on all sites in the Cars.com network, all for one low price.

How do I get my ad in the newspaper?

If you place a used-car print classified ad in an affiliate newspaper, it will appear in print and may be listed on the Cars.com network. To see if your local paper is a Cars.com affiliate, check the list of newspapers whose listings appear on this site. If you already placed a used-car classified through a newspaper, you may wish to verify that your ad isn't already on the site before completing the Sell It Yourself process.

Please note that Sell It Yourself is an online product only. Your Sell It Yourself ad will not be placed in your local newspaper.

However, some newspapers may offer an ad package that allows you to place a print ad and a Sell It Yourself ad at the same time. Those print/online combination packages are sold only through certain affiliate newspapers.

What geographic regions does your service cover?

How does your partnership with Yahoo! Autos benefit me?

Yahoo! Autos is an independent automotive information site. We formed our exclusive partnership with Yahoo! Autos in December 2007 to be the exclusive provider of used car listings for Yahoo! Autos. This means that any visitor who searches Yahoo! Autos will have access to any ad posted to the Cars.com network. What this means for our private party advertisers is that with our relationship, we have increased the potential exposure for your Sell It Yourself classified ad significantly.

Cars.com has always provided automotive buyers with convenient ways to contact you. Our partnership with Yahoo! Autos simply gives more buyers the opportunity to reach you via phone, and if you choose, e-mail.

How much does it cost to edit or renew my ad?

All edits and renewals to your ad are free of charge when included in the ad package purchased.

How can I upgrade my ad package?

Qualifying ad packages can be upgraded if you receive an updrade email from Cars.com. To find out if your package qualifies or if you have problems with upgrading via email, please contact the Cars.com customer service team. Please note: It is not possible to downgrade an ad.

Can I post multiple ads at once?

You can place more than one ad, but you have to create and pay separately for each ad and each ad must be for a separate vehicle. Please note that some states limit the number of cars a private party may sell each year before being classified as a dealer. Check your state's requirements if you would like to know this.

If you are a dealer, consider becoming a Cars.com dealer. Please click here for more information.

Can I reuse my ad to sell a second car?

No. Per the Sell It Yourself Terms & Conditions, each Sell It Yourself ad can only be used to advertise a single vehicle. If you wish to sell a second vehicle, you will need to create and pay for a separate ad. Ads found to have been used for multiple vehicles will be deleted by Cars.com and no refund will be provided.

How do buyers contact me?

You provide contact information so that prospective buyers can let you know they are interested in your vehicle. You must provide at least one phone number. Additionally, you can provide one e-mail address and up to two phone numbers (daytime, evening, mobile and/or pager).

How do I protect my identity?

You can manage how you are identified. For example, instead of listing your full name, you may use your first initial and last name, or just use a contact name of "Private Seller." Also, Cars.com offers Privacy Manager, which allows you to keep your phone number private by using a toll-free number.

For more information, read the Cars.com Privacy Statement.

What safe selling practices should I follow when selling my car?

Even though the sale of your car will take place offline, you still need to be diligent in protecting yourself from a potential rip-off. Before finalizing the sale, we recommend you read our Dealing With Fraudulent Leads section and familiarize yourself with the various scams con artists use to swindle car sellers.
