What is a VIN, style and other vehicle characteristics?

Familiarizing yourself with vehicle characteristics is important in your attempt to market and sell your car. For definitions of these terms, read the Basics and Terminology portion of our How To Sell a Used Car story in Advice.

What are the Additional Selling Points and Condition Description fields used for?

The Additional Selling Points section should be used to provide a detailed description about your vehicle and help attract interest. While you can include anything in this field, we recommend including details such as additional equipment, how you have cared for the vehicle, Kelley Blue Book value and anything else that will help sell your vehicle.

The Condition Description is an ideal spot to provide specific details about the interior or exterior condition that may not be visible from your photos. This section provides a great opportunity to identify minor dents, etc. to help reassure buyers that the vehicle only shows average wear and tear.

Can I add multiple photos?

Yes, simply select a package that includes the ability to upload multiple photos. For more information on adding photos to your ad, please refer to our Adding Photos to Your Ad section of the FAQ.

How can I get a digital photo from a paper print or negative?

If you already have a print or negative of the photo that you want to use in your ad, you can bring it to your local drugstore, film-processing center or copy center. Many major drugstores and film processing centers have self-service kiosks that allow you to scan your photo and save it on a disk or CD-ROM. If you don't want to scan a photo yourself, many copy centers and film-processing centers will do this for you. If you have a photo of your vehicle on an undeveloped roll of film, most major drugstores and film processors will process the film and save images on a disk or e-mail them to you for a nominal charge.

Why do I need an account?

While creating your ad, you will be asked if you are a new or returning user. First-time users will be asked to provide their name, address, seller type, e-mail address and to choose a password. This will allow us to create a Cars.com account for you. Your Cars.com account will allow you to come back and edit or renew your ad. Your account information will not be provided to any visitors to Cars.com (unless you've otherwise provided that information in the contact information of your ad) and will only be used by Cars.com to contact you regarding your account or your Sell It Yourself ads. You also will receive automated e-mail notifications to the e-mail address you provide from our site when your ad is posted to the Cars.com network, when you make edits to your ad or when it is time to renew your ad. Read the Cars.com Privacy Statement for more information.

What payment methods may I use to purchase my ad?

Cars.com accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover, as well as PayPal for payment.

What is the card security code?

The Card Security Code is an Internet security feature that now appears on the back of most Visa and MasterCard credit cards. This code is a three-digit number which provides a cryptographic check of the information embossed on the card.

The security code helps validate that the customer placing the online order actually has the credit card in his/her possession, and that the credit/debit card account is legitimate.

How does that security code protect me?

The security code is only printed on the card and it is not contained in the magnetic stripe information nor does it appear on sales receipts or billing statements - you must have the card in your possession in order to use this code.

Card Security Codes are not raised, so they are not scanned into standard credit card readers. In theory, these numbers are only visible to you. When you give your Card Security Code to a merchant, you assist the merchant in verifying that the order is being placed by you, the card holder.

Where can I find the security code?

Visa and Mastercard Users
Flip your card over and look at the signature box. You should see either the entire 16-digit credit card number or just the last four digits followed by a special 3-digit code. This 3-digit code is your Card Security Code.

American Express and Discover Users
The card security code feature is not supported at this time.

Do I have to enter this code now?

If you are using Visa or MasterCard and this code is printed on your card, you must enter the code. (If you are using a Discover or American Express card, you will not need to enter this security code.) In order for this transaction to be accepted and processed, you must enter this code if it's printed on your card. This is done for your protection.

If you don't have the card in your possession at this time, you will need to obtain the card and re-enter your ad information.

What happens when I pay?

When you agree to purchase an ad on the Cars.com network, we charge your credit card for the ad's price and then we post your ad to the Cars.com site, kbb.com's Blue Book Classifieds and the Web sites of our more than 175 affiliate newspapers and television stations. Your ad will post to Cars.com after you pay for it, usually within a few minutes.

What is a secure server?

Cars.com's secure server prevents others from seeing the information you provided at the time you purchased your ad.

Do I get a refund if I cancel my ad before the expiration date?

Please review our Refund Policy. We do not give partial or complete refunds for removing ads from the site before they expire. The purchase price includes unparalleled exposure to millions of prospective buyers who visit Cars.com, kbb.com's Blue Book Classifieds and the Web sites of our more than 175 affiliate newspapers and television stations. In addition, with some packages you can renew your ad for free as many times as you need to until the advertised vehicle sells. You may also want to use our free selling tools, which are customized for your vehicle and include window stickers, fliers and a bill of sale.
